Tips on how to remove blood stains from carpet.

Here I will describe different methods on removing blood stains from carpet. Every carpet is different. Some types of synthetic carpets are very stain resistant, while wool carpets can be prone to permanent staining.

If you have already tried different stain removers to remove blood from your carpet without luck, it could be that the stain is permanently set. If you haven’t yet tried to remove it there is more chance the stain will come out. Acting quickly while the stain is still damp, you will have a better chance of removal. The following blood removal tips are for DIY and professional cleaners.

What you will need.

Clean white absorbent towelling.
Detergent for woollen clothes.
A teaspoon of detergent for woollens, to half a pint of warm water.
White vinegar solution
One part white vinegar to four parts water.

Pretest the solution in an inconspicuous area first.

Procedure on how to remove blood from carpet.

Scrape off any excess of dried blood. If wet blot up blood spillage as much as possible using white absorbent cloth or white kitchen towel. Apply pressure to absorb as much as possible.
Spray on the mixture of wool detergent and allow to soak in and allow time to dissolve and soften the blood.
Working from the outer edge inwards, use the white towelling to remove the blood. Frequently blot with dry cloths. Repeat as necessary until the stain has gone.
Rinsing. Mix one part white vinegar to four parts water.
Pour mixture into a spray bottle and spray over the stain.
Blot dampened area (do not rub) to remove moisture and repeat with fresh cloths.

Removing heavy amounts of blood from carpet for professional cleaners.

Over the years I have dealt with many blood stains. Quite often they are caused when an elderly person has caught their skin on a sharp object or accidentially banged their head. As we age our skin becomes much thiner and more prone bleeding.

As described below, I was called to a job where a lady had caught her leg on a patio chair and walked into her home trailing blood onto the carpet.

These types of stains require professional equipment and specialist cleaning products. If you have these types of heavy blood stains, it is better to call a professional who will have much better success.

Which products to use for blood removal.

There are quite a few products on the market and I have used different types of stain removers to remove blood. The most successful in my opinion is Prochem Fabric Restorer which is a water based solvent. When measured to the instructions it is sprayed onto the carpet and it will dissolve the blood ready for removal by hot water extraction.

Prochem also provides an other solvent based stain remover recommended for blood which I have not tried as yet called Prochem Stain Pro.

Below is the procedure I used to remove heavy blood stains from a wool carpet.

Here is where the blood has been walked into the house.

First I have sprayed the Prochem Fabric Restorer mixture onto the stains and allowed the blood to soften for around 15 minutes as the stains were quite heavy.

Once the blood has softened, the area is scrubbed with a stiff brush ready for removal.

Here I am using a Prochem Glidemaster hand tool with cold water to extract and rinse each stain. The blood is removed quite easily, although on some of the stains a second attempt was needed to completely remove the stains.

As can bee seen, the blood stains have been completely removed successfully. As the carpet was already slightly soiled with foot traffic, I also had to clean the walkways to match the newly cleaned areas.

And the final result. A lovely clean carpet and a very happy and grateful customer.
